Finally, TikTok has been banned in India by the Government along with 58 Chinese apps including CamScanner, Shareit, UC Browser, and others. All apps made by Chinese companies. The Indian Government in its notice stated that these apps illegally share the data of users to other companies which is harmful to the integrity of India, defense of India, and public order.
As per the order from the Ministry of Electronics and IT, the ministry has banned the apps under the provisions of Section 69 of the IT Act. According to this act “The Central Government takes action against those who harm the sovereignty, integrity of India, Security of state and public order”. Reportedly MEITY has issued orders for Google and Apple to ban all 59 Chinese apps in 24 hours.
All 59 apps made by Chinese companies. TikTok is very popular and best know app in the list includes Club Factory, an online apparel retailer, ES File Explorer, and Shareit, which used to transfer files, Likee and Helo, which are social networks similar to TikTok, News dog, News app, UC Browser popular browser, Clash of Kings a strategy games and other Mi apps. On this list, many of the companies had donated to PM care funds like TikTok had given 30 crores to the PM funds, while Xiaomi also donated 10 crores to the PM funds.
How the apps were banned. In MEITY notes “ The Ministry of Information and Technology has received many complaints from various sources including reports about the misuse of users data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India. Recently, Apple released iOS 14 updates in which the developers found that TikTok uses user’s data in an unauthorized manner. MIETY has asked the Department of Telecommunications to order telecom companies and internet service providers to block access to these apps, which users cannot access these apps apart from removing them from app stores so that people cannot be downloaded.
Some months later, both TikTok and Helo faced ban over but in this case, it was able to keep going. The current ban is likely related to the conflicts between India and China but the Government did not clear the reason behind the ban. Now all one says that the ban comes as a big opportunity for Indian developers to make alternatives apps of banned Chinese apps.
The entire list of Chinese apps banned by Indian Government, includes everything from Social apps to file transfer apps such as ES File Explorer, to games. It is hard to understand why the government chooses these apps. Also the list of its alternative apps.
